Streetcar Conductor Ducky

Name: Streetcar Conductor Ducky
Interests: Driving the Japanese streetcar over the high level bridge in Edmonton
Where to Find: Zydeco Gifts
Brand: Oriental Trading Company
Price: $1.98

Tickets please.

If you’ve never taken the Edmonton streetcar across the high level bridge then I highly recommend that you give it a try. It’s an inexpensive way to travel downtown but it doesn’t run as often as a bus.

Streetcar Conductor Ducky has been driving the streetcar and punching holes in tickets for 5 years now. You can see the string for his ticket punch hanging out of his left breast jacket pocket. He is retired and it’s a great volunteer job (he also gives his grandkid ducks free rides and let’s them wear his cool hat).

Cold Rubba Ducky from Edmonton

Name: Ow! Flagpole Cold Rubba Ducky
Interests: Hanging out with Frosty since I also look like a snowman.
Where to Find: Christmas Store on Whyte Ave (no longer in business)
Brand: Rubba Duck
Price: $7.25 Cdn (half price)

My tongue is stuck to the flagpole.

If you’re like me, you hate to admit it, but now that it is September, it is technically fall. Therefore, I am going to feature a wintery rubba duck today. Cold Rubba Ducky was one of the first Rubba Ducks that I purchased. He is snow white and his skin is opalescent like a snowflake. He is wearing a blue satin top hat and bow tie. His beak is blue from the cold and so are his eyes.

He reminds me of snowboarding in -30 in Fernie. It was so cold that my hair was frozen and my eyelashes had icicles on them. His bum has a sketch of a thermometer on it that reads well below zero. He was born on March 11 which is a bit odd give his cold nature, but let’s face it there is always still snow in Edmonton on March 11.

Poem on his tag:

“This duck is sooooo cold
it’s frozen.

U Betcha! Born and raised in Gooseberry Falls,
Minnesota.

Doesn’t believe in flying
south for the winter.”

High Roller Ducky from Edmonton

Name: High Roller Ducky
Interests: Bringing in the dough any way I can.
Where to Find: Vending Machine at Cineplex Odeon North Edmonton
Brand: Eye Poppers by Krazy Town
Price: $2.00 Cdn

Show me the money.

Since the Eye Popper ducks are so hard to open, I decided I must share my strategy for opening the little egg shaped containers:

  1. Get a hammer.
  2. Place the egg on the floor or better yet-outside.
  3. Smash the hammer onto the seam of the egg (exact middle) a few times.
Note: If the shell is breaking, continue to hammer at the shell until it is completely broken and you can safely remove the duck

4. Pick up the egg and pull it apart or unscrew it apart.

High Roller Ducky is all grey except for his 24kt gold beak (no it’s not real gold of course) and the 18kt gold “$”sign necklace hanging around his neck. The High Roller Ducky that I got has a worn off “$”sign necklace. It wasn’t painted thick enough.

8 Ball Ducky from Edmonton

Name: 8 Ball Ducky
Interests: Playing pool
Where to Find: Vending Machine at Cineplex Odeon North Edmonton
Brand: Eye Poppers by Krazy Town
Price: $2.00 Cdn

Don’t sink me.

Yesterday we took my daughter to see Brave. It was a very cute movie and we saw it at the North side Cineplex Odeon so that I could buy a few Eye Popper duckies after the movie. My daughter loves carrying around the little capsules of duckies. Since the containers are almost impossible to turn, twist and pull apart, I knew they weren’t choking hazards.

I spent $30.00 trying to get the complete set of ducks (toy machines bring randomness and rarity to trying to complete a collection). I received many duplicates and have a new set of 5 for my friend who also collects rubber ducks.

8 Ball Ducky is unique out of the 11 eye popper ducks because he is the only duck that has googly eyes like cookie monster. One eye is looking up to the right and the other is looking down to the left. He is all black including his beak and he has an 8 ball on his belly. Shake him to find out if he is a magic 8 ball.

Does anyone want to trade me? I still need the dracula ducky and the ducky in the suit (these are probably the rarest and only 7 were made or something).

Millcreek Pool Lifeguard Ducky from Edmonton

Name: Millcreek Pool Lifeguard Ducky
Interests: Keeping little kids safe all summer long.
Where to Find: Elephants Never Forget (no longer in business)
Brand: Schylling
Price: $4.50

Swim a lap to get a stamp so you can go in the deep end.

I remember the summer that my best friend and I spent the day at Millcreek Pool in Edmonton. We dove off the high diving boards many times, inhaled the sweet summer scent of sunscreen, purchased slurpees that the wasps invaded and dried off in the sun. My friend dried off a bit too much and sunburned her back really bad. Millcreek pool is down in the river valley and there isn't much shade. I can't wait to take my daughter to the pool this summer, but we are going to go in the evening so the UV isn't as high.

Millcreek Pool Lifeguard Ducky is wearing a blue ball cap so he doesn't get heat stroke. He also has on a red tank top and is holding a life preserver. There is also a whistle on a pink string around his neck.

Daizee Rubba Ducky from Edmonton

Name: Everything is just Daizee Rubba Ducky
Interests: Picking daisies, chilling in the park on sunny days.
Where to Find: Christmas Store on Whyte Ave (no longer in business)
Brand: Rubba Duck
Price: $7.50 Cdn

I am a flower child.

Daizee Ducky was hatched on August 15 and is a hippy. She has a daisy tattooed on her rear. Her eyes are as blue as her bandana and fresh daisies keep her bandana on her head. She looks like she is not quite all there (probably from smoking a bit too much). Her body is typical rubber ducky yellow and she has a super bright orange beak.

Poem on her tag:

“Hobbies include spending the day at the beach with friends, dancing and singing along with the radio.

Always the ‘flower duck,’ she loves to raid her
mom’s closet for old love beads, peasant shirts and
Beatles glasses - anything from the ‘60s.

Will travel the world and live the life
of a world-famous diva.

Biggest problem is speaking her mind.
but hey! That’s a girl’s prerogative!"

D. Cure Rubba Ducky from Edmonton

Name: D Cure - starts with Awareness Rubba Ducky
Interests: Raising money for the cure.
Where to Find: Christmas Store on Whyte Ave (no longer in business)
Brand: Rubba Duck
Price: $7.50 Cdn

Beat breast cancer.

This week is going to be the all Rubba Duck week. I’ve never done an entire week of the same brand of rubber ducks, so hopefully you won’t be tired of Rubba Ducks by the end of the week.

There used to be a Christmas store on Whyte Ave at least 12 years ago that sold Rubba Ducks. At one point, I was paying $15.00 Canadian per Rubba Duck. They are $10.00 in the US. However, I bought most of my Rubba Ducks on sale for $7.50 from the Christmas store. Toys R Us in the US and a few in Canada used to carry them too. At Toys R Us usually an associate would dig in the back for me and I would manage to find a few. Now, I can’t find them anywhere in Canada and since their website isn’t working, I am going to guess that they are out of business.

D. Cure is from the same wave as Duck Spa. I think there were at least 10 waves the last time I was on the Rubba Duck website. She hatched on Mother’s Day. She has a pink cancer ribbon on her bum and around her neck. She has a pink hat on and is batting her eyelashes. She has eyelids too, which is rare to see on a rubber duck. Her beak is bright lipstick pink and matches the cancer ribbons. She looks like she is ready to attend a high tea or fundraiser luncheon.

Poem on her tag:

“Breast Cancer is very serious.
but the disease can be beat.

The cure starts with awareness.
then office check-ups regularly.

Let’s all come together as one family.
to show love and support
and comfort if need be.”

Mini Devil Duckies from Bang On

Name: Mini Devil Duckies
Interests: Travelling like the Gnome from Travelocity
Where to Find: Bang-on on Whyte Ave
Brand: ACC
Price: $7.99 for 6

Ohhh Parie..Je taime

While Colin and I travelled around the world in 2009, we carried two mini devil rubber duckies with us who starred in the same role as Travelocity’s travel gnome. We brought the green and purple mini devil duckies.

I have the complete set of Mini Devil Duckies in my Zen Garden in my office. The following 6 colours come in a set: orange, red, yellow, green, blue and purple. They make perfect pencil toppers too. These are the tiniest rubber ducks that I own.

Good Luck Ducky from Edmonton

Name: Good Luck Ducky
Interests: Watching Bingo matches
Where to Find: Vending Machine at Cineplex Odeon North Edmonton
Brand: Eye Poppers by Krazy Town
Price: $2.00 Cdn

Rub me and you might just win... at bingo.

Good Luck Ducky is all green and has thin lips. He glows almost an alien green around his eye balls and beak, but he does not glow in the dark. He has a dark green four leaf clover on his tummy.

Yin Yang Ducky from Edmonton

Name: Ying Yang Ducky
Interests: Doing Ying yoga
Where to Find: Vending Machine at Cineplex Odeon North Edmonton
Brand: Eye Poppers by Krazy Town
Price: $2.00 Cdn

Pull my yang.

I visited the Windermere Cineplex Odeon today for Community Day which means free movies and the money from popcorn sales went to charity. It was a great event and we saw Alvin and the Chipmunks Chipwrecked. However, I was disappointed that there wasn’t a rubber ducky gumball machine. In time, they may get gumball machines. After all, they have only been open a week.

Yin Yang ducky is all black and has a white bill and a white and black Ying yang symbol on his belly. He reminds me of junior high because I was really into the Ying Yang jewlery at that time. I had the earrings and the necklace.

Drunk Lipstick Kisses Ducky from Bath and Body Works

Name: Drunk Lipstick Kisses Ducky
Interests: Smooching and being smooched.
Where to Find: Bath and Body Works at Southgate
Brand: Bath and Body Works
Price: $4.50 Cdn

Which shade do you prefer?

I bought this rubber duck at Bath and Body Works a week ago. They have quite a few of these rubber ducks, so this ducky is probably still available.

Drunk Lipstick Kisses Ducky is all white except for her fuschia, red, pasty pink and peach lipstick marks all over her. Her beak is bright red. She could also pass as a badly decorated leopard print ducky.

Heart Breaker Ducky from Edmonton

Name: Heart Breaker Ducky
Interests: Ripping hearts out
Where to Find: Vending Machine at Cineplex Odeon North Edmonton
Brand: Eye Poppers by Krazy Town
Price: $2.00 Cdn

My achy breaky heart.

Heart Breaker Ducky is the same grey colour as my cat. She has black splotches of make-up by her eyes, which makes me think that she must not be the one doing the breaking up. She has a purple bill and a pink broken heart on her chest.

Raining Hearts Ducky from Bath and Body Works

Name: Raining Hearts Ducky
Interests: Jumping in puddles and frolicking in the rain
Where to Find: Bath and Body Works at Southgate
Brand: Bath and Body Works
Price: $4.50 Cdn

 It’s raining hearts.

I was at Southgate mall on Monday night helping my husband shop for jeans. We had a hard time finding denim jeans because 80s coloured jeans are back in style and the yellow, red and green jeans were monopolizing the shelf space.

I’ve been trying to find time to pop into Bath and Body Works to see if they have new ducks. So I stopped in and brought my collection number from 602 to 604. By the way, June is the semi-annual sale, so I am going to check in then to try to get a reusable ducky shopping bag.

Raining Hearts Ducky is all white but has pink, mauve and aqua hearts spotted all over her body. The brightest heart matches her bill.

Pirate Ducky from Edmonton

Name: Pirate Ducky
Interests: Sailing and stealing maps for treasure
Where to Find: Vending Machine at Cineplex Odeon North Edmonton
Brand: Eye Poppers by Krazy Town
Price: $2.00 Cdn

Arrr matey.

Pirate Ducky has a red and white bandana on his head with cut-outs for his eyes. He also has a skull and crossbones on his belly. My daughter loves to walk around with his head sticking out of her mouth. She bites down on him and then his eyes pop-out. It is quite funny, but we have to watch her carefully because the pop out eyes are a major choking hazard.

Green Batty Eyes Ducky from Dollar Giant

Name: Green Batty Eyes Ducky
Interests: Recycling and hugging trees
Where to Find: Dollar Giant at South Park
Brand: Greenbrier International, Inc
Price: $1.25 Cdn

I love ducky cake

Dollar stores are great places to find rubber ducks. Most dollar stores have a baby or toy section and that is often where the rubber ducks are hiding.

Green Batty Eyes Ducky is Ernie’s rubber duck’s greener cousin. His bill is always perched upwards into a smile. He loves visiting Ernie and having baths with him. I like the wing detailing on the style of rubber duck.

Alphabet Wedgits Ducks from Kid's Stuff and My Favorite Aunt’s

Name: Alphabet Wedgits Rubber Ducks
Interests: Looking at the pyramids and teaching kids their ABCs
Where to Find: Kid’s Stuff and my Favorite Aunt’s (but originally from Winners)

Brand: www.wedgits.com
Price: $6.00 Cdn (second hand)

We know our ABCs.

My mom works in a second hand clothing store that sells children’s clothes, women’s clothes, home decor and toys. My mom has become my personal shopper for clothes and rubber ducks. I was quite excited when she brought me home the weewedgimals. They are made of phthalate-free-vinyl. The packaging spells ducky “duckee.” I guess they are trying to be different. They have square pedestals on their bottoms and you can purchase little blocks for them to sit on. I don't own any of the blocks but they're available from their website.

I have 4 Alphabet Wedgit rubber ducks and they are A, B, C, and D. D is not shown in the above picture but he looks the same as the others except he has a letter D on him. Each duck has a white, green, yellow, navy and red striped pyramid on his head. A lowercase letter is shown on the tail and an uppercase letter on the chest. Each duck has a red bill and cute chubby cheeks. I like these rubber ducks and my daughter loves playing with them too.

Blue Batty Eyes from Dollar Giant

Name: Blue Batty Eyes Ducky
Interests: Collecting coins and riding horses
Where to Find: Dollar Giant at South Park
Brand: Greenbrier International, Inc
Price: $1.25 Cdn

Help me get out of this net.

I love shopping at Dollar stores and today I went to Dollar Giant for the first time. I managed to find two more rubber ducks that I don’t have. I own this duck in yellow but not in green or blue. These two new rubber ducks brings my collection to 604 rubber ducks.

Blue Batty Eyes Ducky is an Ernie lookalike rubber duck. She has nice eye lashes that stick out to the sides and make her look like she is smiling.

Zombie Rubber Duck from Edmonton

Name: Zombie Ducky
Interests: Popping out my pupil-less eyes at people
Where to Find: Vending Machine at Cineplex Odeon North Edmonton
Brand: Eye Poppers by Krazy Town
Price: $2.00 Cdn

I can still see you.

Anytime a collector of anything hears “collect all...” she is usually enticed to collect the entire set. This was how I felt at Cineplex Odoen on the Northside. I was there to see The Hunger Games and I spotted a ducky vending machine. This is the third ducky vending machine that I have seen in Edmonton. I waited in line at the concession for 10 minutes to try to get change for toonies. However, they didn’t have any. Don’t waste your time. Go straight to the box office for change. Anyway, I purchased 9 duckies and 3 of them were repeats, but I ended up with 6 of the 11. Not bad.

Zombie Ducky was the third duck that shot out of the vending machine. He is squishy, has no pupils, has a pink bill and the outline of an X-Ray on his chest. Stay tuned to learn about the other Eye Popper ducks.

Mr. T CelebriDuck from Bang On

Name: Mr. T Celebriduck Rubber Ducky
Interests: Looking rough
Where to Find: Bang-On
Brand: http://www.celebriducks.com/shop/celebrityducks.htm
Price: $15.00 Cdn

Chilling on the Avenue

I am not even sure if you can call celebrity Celebriducks a rubber duck or not. Personally I am not a fan of rubber ducks that are so done up they don’t even look like a rubber ducky anymore. I’ve seen a few cat and dog rubber ducks, but I don’t own many of these style of rubber ducks. You can only tell a celebrity Celebriduck is a rubber duck because it has a beak instead of a human looking nose.
I also think Celebriducks are extremely overpriced compared to other rubber ducks. They are $15.00 each. Great mark up for the company. I am sure these rubber ducks only cost $2.00 to produce.

My husband’s aunt and cousin bought me Mr. T from the store on Whyte Ave where you can design your own T-Shirts-Bang-On. Don’t get me wrong. I do appreciate that they bought me this rubber duck and I am happy to have this “limited edition” in my collection. However, celebrity Celebriducks just aren’t my favorite style of rubber ducky.

4 Leaf Clover Patch Ducky

Name: 4 Leaf Clover Patch Ducky
Interests: Searching for 4 leaf clovers
Where to Find: Chicken Scratch
Brand: Unknown
Price: $1.99 Cdn

Wear green for St. Patty's Day

As 4 Leaf Clover Patch Ducky says, I hope you're wearing green for St. Patrick's Day today. I am and so is my daughter and husband. Since green is my favorite colour, I am a fan of St. Patrick's Day. Have a green pint for 4 Leaf Clover Ducky today and bring yourself some luck. I remember drinking green milk in Elementary School.

I bought 4 Leaf Clover Patch Ducky a few years ago from Chicken Scratch on Whyte Avenue. He is covered in 4 leaf clovers and is a mini duck. He is always looking up and is about to catch a fish in his beak. You'll see his camo brothers and sisters in future posts. he sits on a glass shelf in my bathroom above the toilet.
